Fåfängan is a lookout point with gastronomic supplies in Stockholm 's Södermalm district .

location

It is located at the end of the Klockstapelsbacken road, which leads north from Folkungagatan, on a hill at the northeastern end of Södermalm high above Stockholm's harbor and, thanks to its almost square planting with heavily pruned trees, represents a striking landmark.

history

Field Marshal Erik Dahlberg built a fortress on the hill in 1655 to guard the approach to Stockholm, some remains of which can still be seen. The area was given its current name Fåfängan in the 1770s. The name means nothing in German and refers to the worthlessness of the land, which was difficult to use. At that time the site belonged to the wholesale merchant Frederik Lundin . He had a pavilion built here in the middle of a square flower garden.

Ultimately, this use still exists today.

Fåfängan in art

The Swedish painter Karl Nordström created several pictures of Fåfängan and the surrounding area. For example, in 1891 the oil painting Fåfängan, Stockholm , in which the hill is depicted in a dark mood of light. 1915 the pictures Fåfängan från Beckholmen and Fåfängan mot Backholmen . In addition, there is his picture Utsikt över Fåfängan .
