Nils Edvard Kreuger (born October 11, 1858 in Kalmar , † May 11, 1930 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish painter , draftsman , illustrator and commercial artist .

life and work

Nils Edvard Kreuger attended the drawing class at the preparatory school at the Stockholm Art Academy from 1874 to 1876. However, Kreuger was never a student of the art academy itself. From 1876 to 1880 he worked with Edvard Perséus and from 1881 to 1887 he was a student of Jean-Paul Laurens and the Académie Colarossi in Paris . From 1883 the stay in Paris was interrupted by summer stays in Holland and Sweden . In 1887 and 1888 he worked in Varberg together with Richard Bergh and Karl Nordström . In 1888/1889 Kreuger worked again in Paris and from 1889 to 1896 again in Varberg. In 1896 he moved to Stockholm .

In 1899 Kreuger became a member of the board of the Swedish Artists Association, in whose foundation he had participated in 1886. He was also involved in the opposition of Swedish artists to the Stockholm Academy in 1885. Since the 1880s he has regularly sent the exhibitions of the Swedish Artists Association. In Paris, Kreuger had joined the Impressionists .

In the early years Kreuger often used an original mixed technique that combined oil painting and drawing or dotting with ink. In later years he preferred a simplistic, summary, broad style of painting.

Kreuger created several monumental compositions as wall paintings for schools in Stockholm. In general, however, he preferred the small and medium image format. Despite his extensive production, Kreuger never repeated himself in the selection of his motifs. His drawings (Federmanier), his book illustrations and posters (e.g. poster for the magazine Ord and Bild ) are also known. His series is particularly well-known: Historiska Baksidor (historical downside); a collection of grotesque, oil-painted caricature portraits of noble people (including Charles XII and Frederick the Great).

Kreuger had been married to Berta Elisabet (born von Essen, 1857–1932) since 1886.
