Olev Jõgi

Olev Jõgi (born January 9, 1919 in the municipality of Leisi , Saaremaa , † January 27, 1989 in Tallinn ) was an Estonian literary scholar and translator .

Life

Jõgi went from 1928 to 1934 in Leisi to school and put in 1941 at the high school of Kuressaare the matriculation examination from. During the Second World War he served in the Red Army , which he continued as an officer until 1953. He then worked for several years as an editor for various magazines and newspapers before he was the founding editor of the magazine Keel ja Kirjandus from 1958 to 1983 . As a result, he played a decisive role in shaping literary studies in post-war Estonia, "Keel ja Kirjandus was his magazine".

Jõgi studied from 1950 to 1956 by distance learning at the University of Tartu Russian Philology. He then spent two years doing a PhD at the Institute for Language and Literature of the Estonian Academy of Sciences . He had been a member of the CPSU since 1945 and of the Estonian Writers' Union since 1955 .

The Estonian literary scholar Mall Jõgi is his daughter, the poet Mihkel Kaevats his grandson.

Olev Jõgi can show an extensive critical work and has published on numerous authors. Special attention was paid to contemporary Soviet Estonian writers such as Paul Kuusberg and Rudolf Sirge . His journalistic activities also extended to articles on Estonian literature in foreign magazines. He has also made a contribution to Estonian literature by editing Ernst Peterson-Särgava's last great novel after the death .

As a translator, he has mainly translated literature from Polish, Belarusian and Russian and translated the following authors into Estonian, among others: Alexander Sergejewitsch Pushkin , Isaak Emmanuilowitsch Babel , Ilf and Petrow , Alexander Issajewitsch Solzhenitsyn , Valentin Grigoryevich Rasputin , Stanisław Lem , Jerzy Andrzejewski or Wassil Bykau .
