Andres Langemets (born March 9, 1948 in Rapla ) is an Estonian publicist, poet, essayist and literary critic.

Life and literature

Andres Langemets graduated from 42nd middle school, today's German grammar school Kadriorg , in the Estonian capital. From 1966 to 1969 he worked in Soviet companies and as a primary school teacher. 1969/1970 he did his military service in the Red Army .

From 1970 to 1975 Andres Langemets studied Estonian language and literature at the Tartu State University (TRÜ) . He specialized in the field of phonetics . He then worked as an editor for various Estonian newspapers: first in 1975/76 for the cultural newspaper Sirp , from 1976 for the literary magazine Keel ja kirjandus and finally from autumn 1987 to 1997 as editor-in-chief of Looming . In 1997/98 he worked again at Sirp . He is currently the editor of the cultural magazine Tuna .

In the 1980s, Langemets debuted with lyrical works. Since 1980 he has been a member of the Estonian Writers' Union ( Eesti Kirjanike Liit ). In the same year he was a signatory of the " Letter of Forty ", an open letter from Estonian dissidents criticizing the situation in the Estonian SSR .

In addition to his work as an editor, Langemets is a prolific journalist and writes poems and literary reviews; he is the editor and editor of numerous books and occasionally translates from Russian .
