Matthias Brassanus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Matthias Brassanus , also Brassenius , latinized from Braaß (* Kempen ; † January 17, 1552 in Lübeck ) was a German Reformation pedagogue of the 16th century.

Life

The origin of Brassanus can be seen from its information in the university registers. Bartholomäus Sastrow reports in his autobiography that Brassanus lived as a Cistercian monk in the Neuenkamp monastery in Franzburg in Western Pomerania before the Reformation and was sent to the University of Wittenberg by Duke Philip I of Pomerania during its secularization . Here he is proven by his matriculation on May 20, 1531; his leaving certificate of August 10, 1542 proves that he obtained the degree of a master's degree in Wittenberg . At Easter 1543 he was “fuit honoratus” (honorary, free of charge) enrolled as a master's degree at the University of Rostock .

Like Hermann Bonnus , he initially worked as a teacher in Stralsund and was a scholemeister at the St. Nikolai School , one of the three existing churches in Stralsund , where he taught Bartholomäus Sastrow together with Nikolaus Smiterlow 's youngest son Georg. Sastrow characterizes him as fine, messy, chaste, learned Menlin ( fine, moderate, chaste, learned little man ). At Reminiscere 1542, he and his students performed the historia van Joseph , a spiritual play by Joseph and his brothers in the Marienkirche .

In the following year 1543 he was appointed rector of the Katharineum in Lübeck , where he stayed until his death. His successor as rector in Lübeck was Petrus Vincentius . At the beginning of the summer semester of 1549 he was dismissed as professor at the University of Greifswald at his own request and went to teach at the Katharineum in Lübeck, probably with the prospect of succeeding Brassanus after his death. On November 4, 1552, Vincentius was appointed rector in Lübeck.
