Karl Eduard Förstemann (born August 12, 1804 in Nordhausen ; † January 23, 1847 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German Protestant theologian, librarian and historian of the Reformation.

Life

Born as the son of the Nordhausen superintendent Karl Wilhelm Förstemann, he attended the Nordhausen high school and in 1823 moved to the University of Halle-Wittenberg to study theology . From his third semester onwards, he was already working at the university library there and also took a private tutor position in Berlin during his studies . From 1826 to 1830 he worked at the royal library there and received an appointment to Halle to take part in the publication of the Corpus Reformatorum .

In Halle he took over the position of a secretary at the university library in 1832 and worked in the Thuringian-Saxon Association for the Study of Antiquity. In 1835 he was curator , acquired in 1839 at the University of Leipzig , the licentiate in theology and a doctorate in 1840 for doctor of theology at the University of Kiel . He then became a librarian and professor at Halle-Wittenberg University in Halle in 1844 . He remained in this position until his death.

Förstemann made a name for himself primarily through his research in the field of the Reformation history, which is still in significant use today. Furthermore, his work on the history of the Wittenberg university and his genealogical research on Georg Friedrich Handel should be emphasized. His son Joseph Förstemann (1841–1900) also became a librarian at the Leipzig University Library .
