Ilus made his short story debut in the mid-1950s after winning a third prize in a novella competition and having been encouraged by Rudolf Sirge to edit his novella. Ilus published his first book in 1962. It soberly describes life in a kolkhoz farm and thus presents the contemporary problems of Estonian rural life. Even the early criticism stated that the work "exudes a certain dryness that is a consequence of the few virtuoso elements".

The subject of contemporary society runs through the author's entire prose work, with a comparison to the past being made at times. Local critics occasionally compared Ilus' work with Paul Kuusberg or the aforementioned Rudolf Sirge, but pointed conversely to the contrast with Mats Traat , who was working on a comparable subject with a different focus. He is often mentioned in the same breath as authors such as Einar Maasik , Veera Saar , Endel Tennov or Luise Vaher , who thematized everyday Soviet life. In general, Ilus is characterized as an author who gets by without spectacular innovations and maintains the “good old realism” without which contemporary literature would have a “weaker connection with life”.

In spite of this, his early works were also discussed in the exile magazine Mana , and not only negatively: Ivar Grünthal found an “almost dead-ass paradox” in the author , although he previously stated sarcastically: “ Ilus tries to fumigate the sclerosis of the personality cult with the unquenched lime of the class struggle . "

Many of his works have been translated into Russian, while in German there is only one short story in an anthology.
