Ivar Grünthal

Ivar Grünthal (born June 8, 1924 in Tartu , Estonia , † February 14, 1996 in Gothenburg , Sweden ) was an Estonian writer , poet and politician in exile.

Early years

Ivar Grünthal was born the son of Timotheus Grünthal, who was a judge at the Estonian State Court in Tartu. The family originally came from Hiiumaa Island . Ivar Grünthal passed his Abitur at the renowned Hugo-Treffner-Gymnasium in Tartu. He made his debut in 1939 as a poet in school magazines.

exile

Ivar Grünthal initially studied medicine at the University of Tartu , but the Second World War interrupted his studies. Ivar Grünthal fled to Finland during the German occupation of Estonia in 1943 . He fought there in the Finnish army against the Soviet Union . In September 1944 he went into exile in Sweden. After completing his medical degree at Lund University , he worked as a doctor in Visby (1952-1958) and in Gothenburg. Grünthal was also a member of the Estonian government in exile.

Literary man

Ivar Grünthal became one of the most important writers in exile in Estonia in Sweden. In 1957 he founded the magazine Mana , which he directed until 1965. It was his concern not to let the contacts between the literature of the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic and the exile Estonian literary scene be severed. He also worked as a translator of Estonian literature into Swedish . Among other things, he translated the poems of Marie Under .

Ivar Grünthal's lyric has strong erotic tones and is characterized by a powerful masculinity. His description of the human body and his empathy with human physiology is influenced by his medical experience.
