Axel Ludvig Romdahl , mostly Axel L. Romdahl (born March 18, 1880 in Linköping , † May 14, 1951 in Gothenburg ) was a Swedish art historian and museum director.

Life

Axel Romdahl, the son of Per Axel Cyrus Romdahl (1841–1926) and Clara Adolfina Teresia Brogren (1852–1927), had two younger brothers: Karl Hjalmar (1881–1936) and Gunnar Theodor (1883–1953). The father - from Gotland - taught modern languages ​​as the rector at the Katedralskolan in Linköping.

In 1900, Axel Romdahl completed his studies in Uppsala with a degree in aesthetics - with literature and art history as main subjects - as well as in philosophy . In 1902 he studied for a semester at the Friedrich Wilhelms University in Berlin with Heinrich Wölfflin and Adolph Goldschmidt . There he got to know the Berlin museums under Wilhelm Bode . In 1903 he began his professional career as a curator at the Swedish National Museum in Stockholm and went to the Nordic Museum in Stockholm a year later . In 1905 he was in Uppsala with the thesis " Pieter Bruegel the Elder and his artistic work" to Dr. phil. PhD .

In 1906 Axel Romdahl went to Gothenburg, where he became director of the local art museum and lecturer at the local university . At the latter he was appointed professor for art history and art theory in 1920. The contacts made by Romdahl to the Gothenburg art collector Conrad Pineus (1872–1945) and to Anders Zorn , Carl Larsson and Edvard Munch benefited the Gothenburg Art Museum. In the latter hang among others pictures of the three painters. Works by Jens Ferdinand Willumsen were also added. Werner Lundqvist (1868–1943) donated graphics to the art museum in 1918. Romdahl was also successful in collaboration with other sponsors - for example with Charles Felix Lindberg (1840–1909). In autumn 1948 he retired as museum director and became professor emeritus.

In addition, Romdahl was friends with Erland Nordenskiöld , the zoologist Leonard Jägerskiöld (1867–1945) and the poet Albert Ulrik Bååth (1853–1912). Rohmdahl took part in meetings of the Gothenburg Saturday Club (Swedish Lördagslaget ). There was also discussion - for example with Otto Lagercrantz and Erik Björkman - about politics.

Axel Romdahl married Gudrun Biller (1881–1960) on August 26, 1906 in Stockholm. The couple had four children: Gunnar (1907–1975), Gunnel (1908–1965), Åke (1910–2001) and Torsten (1912–1934).

Axel Romdahl was buried in Linköping.
