Eero Akseli Tommila (born March 5, 1900 in Merikarvia , † October 25, 1968 in London ) was a Finnish chemist and professor at the University of Helsinki .

Eero Tommila in 1963.

academic career

Tommila comes from a farming family in western Finland, studied chemical history, organic chemistry and received his doctorate from Helsinki University in 1932 . His dissertation dealt with the electrochemical oxidation of dicarboxylic acids.

From 1930 to 1944 Eero Tommila was a lecturer at the seminary and the Pedagogical University in Jyväskylä . From 1938 to 1944 he was a lecturer in chemistry at the University of Helsinki and from 1944 to 1967 first professor of physical chemistry .

Tommila's main field of work and research focus was the effect of solvents on reaction rates, in particular the substitution effects of chemical reactions in different solvents; his chair was established in this field. Tommila's successor was Jouko Koskikallio from 1969 to 1990, who researched the reaction kinetics among other things at high air pressure and began photochemical studies in Finland.

Eero Tommila published in German, wrote the first academic textbook on physical chemistry in Finnish in several editions from the 1950s ( Fysikaalinen Kemia , Otava, 1st edition, Helsinki 1950) and later also wrote in English.

Private

Eero Tommila was married to Salli Anna Margareta, b. Niininen, and father of two children. His son is the academic Päiviö Tommila , historian, professor and rector of the University of Helsinki. His daughter is the artist / art teacher Eeva Tommila.
