Juhani Päiviö Tommila (born August 4, 1931 in Jyväskylä ) is a Finnish historian and professor at the University of Helsinki .

Study of history from 1950; Candidate for philosophy 1954; Magister (primus) in philosophy (Finnish history) 1957, licentiate in 1960 and doctorate (primus) in 1964 at the University of Helsinki. Research trips in Europe.

Päiviö Tommila was habilitated with the work La Finlande dans la politique européenne en 1809-1815 (1962).

1955 to 1957 he was in the service of the Historical Commission of Nurmijärvi, 1959 to 1965 assistant for Finnish and Scandinavian history at the University of Helsinki, 1962 to 1967 private lecturer for Finnish history at the University of Helsinki. 1965 to 1976 professor of Finnish history at the University of Turku and from 1967 to 1971 and 1973 to 1975 also dean of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Turku.

In 1976 Tommila was appointed professor of Finnish history at the University of Helsinki, where he remained until his retirement in 1994. From 1988 to 1992 Tommila was rector of the University of Helsinki. From 1987 to 1988 he was previously Dean of the Department of History and Linguistics at the University of Helsinki.

Tommila's main areas of work are Finnish history , especially 19th century political history, urban history, the history of journalism and historiography .

He is an academic , a member of the Academy of Finland since 2004 and a member of the Finnish Scientific Society .

Private

Päiviö Tommila has been married to fil since 1955. maist. Seija Inkeri Katarina, b. Kilpi, daughter of Prof. Sulo Kilpi and Aino Inkeri (née Aimonen), and father of five children: Timo (1956), Arvi (1958), Lauri (1961), Anna (1963) and Leena (1971). His father is Eero Tommila , formerly a chemistry professor at the University of Helsinki, his mother filosofian maisteri Salli Anna Margareta geb. Niininen.
