Academic (Finnish award)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Academic , officially Finnish Akateemikko , Swedish academic is an honorary title awarded by the Finnish President to personalities from science and culture for outstanding achievements since 1948.

history

The number is limited to twelve Finns at a time. The first appointed academics were made up of natural scientists and cultural workers. It was their task to function within the Academy of Finland , the Suomen Akatemia , founded in Helsinki in 1947, as a national science and culture advisory board , in particular the promotion of science was the task of the academy, an organ that was subordinate to the Ministry of Education.

From 1970, when the Finnish Academy was re-established under the same name, the title of academic was divided as an honorary title into Tieteen akateemikko , the academic academic, and Taiteen akateemikko , the art academic, with which outstanding achievements are recognized.

The title “Akateemikko” is not to be confused with that of “ Akatemiaprofessori ”, a professor sponsored by the Finnish Academy as part of the Excellence Initiative, and not to be confused with regular academicians of one of the Finnish scientific societies.
