Richard Peto

Sir Richard Peto (born May 14, 1943 ) is a British statistician and epidemiologist .

Career

Peto attended Taunton's College in Southampton before studying science at the University of Cambridge . He received his MSc in Statistics in 1967 from the University of London . He has been at the University of Oxford since 1969 . There he was appointed Professor of Medical Statistics and Epidemiology in 1992.

Peto made decisive contributions to the development of meta-analysis . For this achievement he became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1989 . The Peto's paradox ("Peto's Paradox") bears his name. Peto worked on the British Doctors Study from 1971 until the end of 2001.

Peto is known for his work against tobacco smoking . For example, Peto has calculated that “the free distribution of cigarettes to British soldiers in World War I cost more victims over the decades than the war itself.” Peto also stated that “Smoking caused more cancer than medicine has ever healed. "

Around 500 publications bear Peto's name. He is among the top 20 most cited medical researchers in the world.
