Tapio Wirkkala (born June 2, 1915 in Hanko ; † May 19, 1985 in Helsinki ) was a Finnish graphic artist , interior architect and designer .

life and work

Wirkkala was a graduate of the Helsinki School of Art and Design .

He worked with Raymond Loewy in New York .

Since 1952, Wirkkala worked for the Finnish glass factory Iittala , which became internationally known through the designs Wirkkalas and especially Alvar Aalto . Wirkkala's best-known designs include the Tapio drinking glass series and his leaf-shaped wooden bowls, the so-called leaf dishes from the 1950s.

From 1957 he worked for Rosenthal . His porcelain , glass and cutlery designs include Century , Composition , Curve , Polygon , Waist and Variation . The Century service was included in the permanent collection of contemporary design at the Center Georges Pompidou in Paris , and today a variation can be found in the MoMa collection in New York. In 1964 his works were shown at documenta III in Kassel in the Industrial Design department . In 1968, Wirkkala received the Medaglia d'Oro for the Rosenthal porcelain Rotunda . In 1972 he was honored with the Finnish Academic of Art (Taiteen akateemikko) award.

Tapio Wirkkala was married to the artist Ruth Bryk (daughter of the artist and entomologist Felix Bryk ). The Tapio Wirkkala Rut Bryk Foundation in Helsinki commemorates the works of both artists, whose daughter Maaria Wirkkala is also an internationally successful artist.
