Arnold Castles
Sir Arnold Stanley Vincent Burgen (born March 20, 1922 ) is a former professor of pharmacology at the University of Cambridge . Among other things, he was director of the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR), UK) and founding president of the Academia Europaea . He was interested in the interaction of drugs with enzymes, which he researched using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy . The Center for Biomedical Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRC Biomedical NMR Center) was opened under his direction in 1980.
Career
Sir Arnold Burgen began his career in 1945 in the House Physician at Middlesex Hospital. From that year until 1948 he worked as a demonstrator. He then worked for a year as an assistant lecturer in the field of pharmacology at Middlesex Hospital Medical School. From 1949 to 1962, the English professor of physiology at McGill University in Montreal . In 1957 he was appointed assistant director of the university hospital , Montreal General Hospital. From 1962 he was Shield Professor of Pharmacology at Cambridge University and Fellow of Downing College in Cambridge and Hon. Fellow in 1972. From 1971 to 1982 Burgen was director of the National Institute for Medical Research. In 1982 he was a Master at Darwin College , Cambridge, and worked there until 1989. In 1984 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . From 1985 to 89 the professor was Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Cambridge . In 1988 he was elected founding president of the Academia Europaea.
