Valentin Kiparsky

Valentin Kiparsky (born July 4, 1904 in St. Petersburg , † May 18, 1983 in Helsinki ) was a Finnish Slavist and linguist.

Kiparsky was a son of the medical doctor René Kiparsky. He came to Helsinki with his parents after the revolution. After graduating from high school, he studied Slavic Studies first in Helsinki and then in Prague. In 1934 he received his doctorate at the University of Königsberg and then worked in Latvia from 1935 to 1938. From 1938 he worked at the University of Helsinki , where he was appointed professor in 1948. In 1958 he was appointed to succeed Max Vasmer at the Free University of Berlin , and in 1963 he returned to Helsinki, where he taught until his retirement in 1974.

In 1977 he was honored with the Finnish Academic Science Award.

His son is the linguist Paul Kiparsky .
