Teuvo Kalevi Kohonen (born July 11, 1934 in Lauritsala ) is a Finnish engineer who was best known for developing the neural model of Self-Organizing Maps (sometimes also referred to as Kohonen maps ).

Kohonen's research area includes the theory of self-organization , associative memory , artificial neural networks and pattern recognition .
He is considered to be one of the pioneers in this area of weak AI , i.e. non-rule-based artificial intelligence .

In 2000 he was awarded the Finnish Akateemikko ( Academic ) award. He is professor emeritus (emeritusprofessori) of the Academy of Finland , as a former sponsor of this institution, and of the Technical University of Helsinki , whose influential Neural Networks Research Center he founded in 1994 .
