Erland Nordenskiöld

Baron Nils Erland Herbert Nordenskiöld (* 1877 in Stockholm ; † 1932 ) was a Swedish ethnologist and anthropologist of Finnish descent.

Life

He was born the son of the famous Finnish researcher Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld and received his education in Uppsala . Nordenskiöld undertook his first research trip to South America in 1899 to Patagonia . This was followed by further expeditions through Argentina and Bolivia (1901–1902) and through Peru and Bolivia (1904–1905).

From 1906 to 1908 he worked at the Naturhistoriska riksmuseet in his hometown and following this activity he led a fourth trip to South America, which took him to Bolivia from 1908 to 1909. In 1912 he was awarded the Loubat Prize and the Wahlberg Gold Medal.

In 1913 he was appointed director of the ethnographic department of the Gothenburg Museum in Gothenburg . In the same year he set out on his last South America expedition to the border region between Brazil and Bolivia. During this trip he met the British explorer Percy Fawcett in the rainforest .

From his five expeditions, Erland Nordenskiöld brought numerous finds, such as plants, rocks or gifts from locals to his homeland, which he gave to Stockholm's museums as exhibits. Erland Nordenskiöld was married to Olga Nordenskiöld, who also accompanied him on some of his trips.

In addition to numerous reports in scientific journals, he also published several books.
