Sten Karling

Sten Ingvar Karling (born January 13, 1906 in Barberton (Ohio) , † December 10, 1987 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish art historian . He researched the art history of Sweden and Estonia .

Life

Sten Karling, the son of Axel Karl Karling (1878–1939) and Elisabeth Karling, née Bomann (1880–1960), received his PhD in art history from the University of Gothenburg under Axel Romdahl in 1931. phil. doctorate and was a lecturer there in 1932. As a professor of art history, he worked from 1933 to 1941 at the University of Tartu and from 1947 until his retirement in 1972 at the University of Stockholm . There were u. a. Erik Forssman , Gerhard Eimer , Lars Olof Larsson and Götz Pochat to his students.

In Estonia he was in charge of the inventory of art monuments. In 1980 he was awarded the Mare-Balticum-Medal of the Martin-Carl-Adolf-Böckler-Stiftung Bad Homburg for his services to the art history of Estonia.

Sten Karling published the Konsthistorisk tidskrift for over twenty years . He has been a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Literature, History and Antiquities since 1961 and of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences since 1969 .

Sten Karling married Kerstin Ouchterlony in 1932 (1906-2004). The couple had a son - Krister Karl Axel Karling (* 1934).
