Skara Cathedral
The Skara Cathedral is one of the oldest cathedrals in Sweden . It was built in the 13th and 14th centuries in the Gothic style. The cathedral is the episcopal church of the Skara diocese .
Building history
The diocese is the oldest diocese in Sweden and was established in 1014 under Olof Skötkonung . The cathedral was first mentioned around 1150. During the renovation in 1999, stone remains were found that were dated to an even older age. The oldest part of today's church building is the Romanesque crypt under the choir . Then the choir itself was built in Gothic style , then the nave around the 14th century. The church was built from hewn sandstone. The floor plan and large parts of the masonry are still from the medieval church. However, much was created after the great fire of 1719. And its current appearance is not least the result of the thorough renovation by the architect Helgo Zettervall and his view of Gothic in the years 1886-1894. After a fire, the cathedral was renovated again in the 1940s and new windows in the chancel designed by Bo Beskow .
