Tjornbron

Tjörnbron is the largest bridge in a multi-part bridge system that connects the west coast of Sweden across the Askeröfjord with Länsväg 160, the islands of Källön , Stenungsunds kommun and Almön in Tjörns kommun . It is the largest of the three bridges that connect Stenungsund on the mainland with the island of Tjörn . The other two bridges are Källösundsbron and Stenungsöbron .

The bridge system connects the islands of Tjörn , Mjörn , Orust and Vindön in the south at Stenungsund and in the north at Sundsandvik (near Uddevalla ) with the mainland. The Tjörnbron is 664 meters long, 15 meters wide, has a span of 386 meters and a clearance for ships of 43 meters. Today's Tjörnbron was opened on November 9, 1981.

As a consequence of the bridge accident at Tjörn, in which the Almöbron collapsed, the construction of a cable-stayed bridge was chosen for the new construction of the bridge . Their two H-pylons are on the opposite banks, so that there is now unhindered passage through the water. In addition, the edge of the road on the new Tjörnbron is marked with lights at night so that the bridge can be seen even in darkness or fog.

During the almost 22 month long construction period for today's Tjörnbron, the connection to the mainland was ensured via ferries and a diversion via the neighboring island of Orust . On November 9, 1981, Sweden's King Carl XVI. Gustaf handed the new Tjörnbron over to its destination.

The first bridge to the island of Tjörn, called Almöbron , built by the MAN plant in Gustavsburg and opened on June 15, 1960, was the first pipe arch bridge and had a span of 278 m. It collapsed as a result of a serious accident on January 18, 1980.

After the unloaded Norwegian freighter Star Clipper had been driven too far out of the fairway - towards the island - to port in the thick fog by the current in the Askeröfjord , it had rammed a bridge pillar at around 1:30 a.m., whereupon the 300-meter-long central section of the bridge collapsed and Parts amidships and fell onto the freighter's navigating bridge.

Six cars and one truck drove over the edge of the bridge, because in the dark and due to thick fog they could not see in time that the road ahead of them had collapsed. A total of eight people were killed, all of them occupants of the crashed vehicles. Nobody was injured on the freighter.
