Chirikure is considered a sharp critic of the corrupt political elite and advocate of the common people of Zimbabwe. Growing up in the time of the liberation struggles and a sharp polarization of the races, these topics play a decisive role as constant retrospectives in his publications. Chirikure studied religion, literature and history in Harare and reads his socially critical, satirical and the identity of Africa evocative poems at his appearances in Shona and in English, often together with musicians.

After independence in 1980 he devoted himself increasingly to his own Shona language as the national language. Many of his poems were set to music, which eventually resulted in a collaboration with various music groups. Meanwhile, Chirikure himself appears with his poems set to music. This music, while urban, is based on the traditional Shona mbira . His style has become increasingly dramatic, satirical and symbolic. He is now considered the most powerful satirist in the country.

In 2011 he was a guest of the DAAD's Berlin artist program .
