Novels

A long letter to September Nowak is about 19-year-old Betti Lauban who, after graduating from high school, goes to the south of France to visit her pen pal September Nowak. On the spot, Betti learns that this pen pal - contrary to what was described in September's letters - by no means leads a glamorous life in Monaco , but is the obese daughter of a cleaning lady and lives in a suburb of Nice . The disappointed Betti sets off on a journey along the French Mediterranean coast and in turn adopts the pseudonym September Nowak.

The Süddeutsche Zeitung called the novel "a great book", Spiegel Online judged: "A book that scratches the surface until real life becomes visible". In the Berliner Zeitung it was said that September Nowak was "an unsentimental, funny story that smells of hormones".

The cook of Bob Dylan , Berges' second novel, tells of Jasmin Nickenig's first days as a tour cook at Bob Dylan. This contrasts with the story of Florentinius Malsam, a Black Sea German between Hitler and Stalin, who disappeared in 1944. When Jasmin learns that a man named Vova could be her missing grandfather near Odessa, she is with Dylan and his band in the (still Ukrainian) Crimea. She hesitates, but her employer encourages her to get to the bottom of the matter.

For the Berliner Morgenpost , The Cook by Bob Dylan is “an excellent novel that fuses pop culture and German history”. In Rolling Stone , the book was compared to Ralf Rothmann's Im Frühling (Die Frühling) in terms of the sober style of speech, the wistful tone and the poetic power . Bob Dylan's cook is "an original, haunting, moving, touching and charming novel."
