Peter Vogel (born March 9, 1937 in Freiburg im Breisgau ; † May 8, 2017 there ) was a German designer of interactive modern electronic art .

Life

With his work Vogel moved in areas between art, philosophy and neurophysiology . Interaction was the central intention of the artist, the viewer becomes a participant, a player who can influence the work through his / her impulses. Vogel was thus an exponent of a generation of artists who placed the viewer's participation at the center of their work. In the context of constructive-concrete and kinetic art, too, the aim is to unite art and life in order to provide the recipient with an active and sensual-aesthetic experience that goes beyond simply viewing images.

After studying physics, Peter Vogel worked at Hoffmann-La Roche in Switzerland, doing brain research and developing medical devices. He was particularly interested in cybernetics and neurobiological processes. In addition to electronic music, this was the gateway to his artistic concept. Cybernetics, music and performance were the cornerstones of his actions. Vogel composed electronic music at an early age , worked in the theater, and manufactured and modified electronic instruments.

His work as a physicist in brain research and his work as a musician and performer led to his art, which only develops in the interaction between the work and the viewer. Vogel's sounding and glowing objects are intended to entice people to play and to lead them to an understanding of the connection between art and technology. One of Vogel's works that focuses both on the connection between art and technology and on the participation of the viewer is Minimal Music Piece (1985). It is an interactive sound installation that reacts to the recipient's body movements by generating sequences of sounds. As soon as the viewer approaches the object, he casts shadows on installed photocells and thereby touches individual light barriers that produce tone sequences.
