Arthur Køpcke

Arthur "Addie" Køpcke , born Arthur Köpcke (born November 26, 1928 in Hamburg ; † October 20, 1977 in Copenhagen ), was a German artist who was mainly active in the Fluxus area. His work included literature, painting, object, concept and action art.

life and work

Køpcke, an autodidact artist, was mainly concerned with painting and literature after 1945. He moved to Copenhagen at the end of 1957 and opened the Køpcke Gallery with his wife Aase ("Tut") in October , which became a center for the avant-garde scene in Denmark for the next five years , with a focus on Fluxus and Nouveau Réalisme . There presented, among others, Piero Manzoni , Robert Filliou , Dieter Roth , Niki de Saint Phalle , Daniel Spoerri and Emmett Williams out. In March 1963, it was closed due to little commercial success. From 1960 to 1968 he was a member of the artists' association “Maj-Udstellingen”. In addition, from 1962 Køpcke was the organizer and participant of many Fluxus events in the Scandinavian region and took part in many Fluxus festivals, including in the cities of Paris , Düsseldorf , Amsterdam and Aachen . From 1972 to 1973 Køpcke was visiting professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen. His work includes panel and scroll paintings, objects, collages , assemblages , Fluxus pieces and literary works. His key work reading / work-pieces-manuscript was written between 1963 and 1965 .

To death Køpckes published Joseph Beuys in 1977 in the time the article Mach's window, halt 'ne speech . The Arthur Köpcke Prize (Arthur Køpckes Mindegat), which has been in existence since 1983 and is awarded annually to Danish artists on his birthday, is named after him.

Trivia

In 2016, Reading / Work-Piece hit the headlines nationwide. A ninety-year-old former dentist had entered the answer word wall in the crossword puzzle of the collage in the New Museum in Nuremberg . She understood the text “Insert words” on the work as an invitation to the visitor.
