Barbara Wien (born November 29, 1953 in Munich ) is a German gallery owner , editor and publisher of artist books .

Life

Barbara Wien studied German and history at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau and at the Free University of Berlin . From 1978 to 1985 she worked as an art critic and editor in Berlin. She has published texts and interviews on Bernhard Joh. Blume , Günter Brus , Ludwig Gosewitz , Dorothy Iannone , Shigeko Kubota , Hermann Nitsch , Nam June Paik , Dieter Roth , Rainer Ruthenbeck, André Thomkins and Arthur Lehning . From 1985 to 1987 she worked with Dieter Roth in Basel and founded Roth's publishing office in Berlin (Savignyplatz). I.a. she edited the magazine for Alles No. 8, 9, 10A & B and worked on the exhibition Dieter Roth - Published and Unpublished , which took place in 1987 as the opening exhibition in the Portikus in Frankfurt am Main at the invitation of Kasper König . For this exhibition, she also put together the catalog 3 preliminary lists .

In 1988 Barbara Wien opened a gallery and a bookstore at Goethestrasse 73 in Berlin. She developed the gallery and edition program with artists from different generations, including a. with Jimmie Durham , Hans-Peter Feldmann , Gundi Feyrer , Nanne Meyer , Dieter Roth and Tomas Schmit . In addition, she developed exhibitions, book and film presentations on Jean Dubuffet and Per Kirkeby with the Swiss publisher Johannes Gachnang and the Berlin gallery owner Rudolf Springer .

Parallel to the publishing projects for the gallery's artists, Barbara Wien published the previously unpublished texts by Arthur Köpcke in 1994. In 2002 she published the book "Gesammelte Interviews" by Dieter Roth and in 2019 its English translation "Collected Interviews" in Edition Hansjörg Mayer in London.

Barbara Wien has developed her gallery program into an internationally active platform for conceptual art since the 1990s. Since 1995 Barbara Wien has taken part in international art fairs with her gallery. a. Art Basel in Basel, Miami & Hong Kong, Frieze Art Fair London & New York, Arco Madrid , FIAC Paris.

Barbara Wien manages the estate of the artist Tomas Schmit and the tomas schmit archive , Berlin (founded in 2008).
