Shigeko Kubota

Shigeko Kubota ( Japanese 久保 田 成 子 , Kubota Shigeko ; born August 2, 1937 in Niigata Prefecture , Japan ; † July 23, 2015 in Manhattan , New York ) was a Japanese-American video artist .

Life

Kubota graduated from Tokyo University of Education with a bachelor's degree in sculpture . In 1964 she went to New York, where she continued her studies at New York University and the New School for Social Research . She made multimedia installations and videos her form of expression. In the 1960s she was influenced by art, music and the theories of Marcel Duchamp and John Cage . In 1964 she became vice president of the Fluxus movement . The female members of Fluxus include Yoko Ono and Mieko Shiomi .

In 1965 she showed the performance vagina painting at the Perpetual Fluxus Festival in New York , in which she spread red paint with a brush attached to her underpants. The Vagina Painting is a female answer to drip painting and action painting understood its main representatives Jackson Pollock was (1912-1956). Other artists who have experimented with expressive use of color are Carolee Schneemann , Helena Almeida , Niki de Saint Phalle and Lynda Benglis .

Until the 1970s, Shigeko Kubota called all of her videos Broken diary . She traveled extensively to Europe, Korea, Japan and the southwest of the USA. In 1977 she married the musician and visual artist Nam June Paik (1932–2006).

Kubota taught at the School of Visual Arts in New York.
