Jimmie Durham (* 1940 in Houston , Harris County (Texas) ) is an American political activist, conceptual artist and writer.

Life

Durham began his artistic activities around 1960 during the civil rights movement . The artist had his first solo exhibition in Austin (Texas) in 1965 . From 1968 to 1973 Durham studied art at the École des Beaux-Arts in Geneva . He finished his studies with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. From 1973 to 1980 Durham held political offices in the American Indian Movement (AIM) and in the International Indian Treaty Council (IITC), of which he was a co-founder in 1974. As a representative of the IITC, Durham was active at the United Nations and, in that capacity, contributed to a declaration on the rights of indigenous peoples . After the end of his political activities, he devoted himself to the fine arts in New York City , and he also wrote essays and poems. In 1987 Durham moved to Cuernavaca (Mexico). Jimmie Durham has lived and worked in Berlin and Rome since 1994.
