International Indian Treaty Council

The International Indian Treaty Council (IITC) is an organization of indigenous peoples in America . The organization, based in San Francisco, strives for the sovereignty and self-determination of the indigenous peoples as well as the recognition and protection of the rights of the indigenous peoples (contractual rights, land rights, hunting and fishing rights), their cultures and holy places.

The IITC was founded in 1974 at a meeting of the American Indian Movement in Standing Rock , South Dakota , by more than 5,000 representatives from 98 indigenous nations from across the Americas. In the same year IITC representatives traveled to Switzerland and suggested the establishment of a support network there. This resulted in the Swiss human rights organization Incomindios Switzerland .

In 1977 the IITC the first indigenous organization of the consultative status of the Economic and Social Council was UNO ( consultative status to the United Nations Economic and Social Council received).

Today the IITC is one of the most influential NGOs in the forums of the UN.
