history

The Kunstverein Arnsberg was founded in autumn 1987 on a private initiative with the aim of creating a platform within the region for encounters with international, contemporary art. In addition to the changing solo and group exhibitions and yearly selected annual editions, the association offers its members accompanying lectures, joint studio visits and excursions. The Arnsberg Art Association is a member of the German Art Association (ADKV). The Art, Culture and Social Foundation of Sparda-Bank West supported the association with € 50,000 in 2010 because it is an institution of the art scene locally, regionally and internationally. In 2013 the art association was nominated for the German art association award as part of Art Cologne . In 2015, the association played a key role in the conception of the minimalist light installation The Dept by Santiago Sierra in Arnsberg. In 2016 the association received the ADKV-Art Cologne Prize for art associations together with the Harburger Bahnhof art association.

Light house in the courtyard of the Wedinghausen monastery

The generous rooms of the Kunstverein are located on the first floor of a classicist town house on the central Neumarkt, a square built according to Schinkel's plans , the structure of which has almost been preserved. The listed building itself was built around 1820 for the magistrate Franz Friedrich Bernhard Höynck. The house has a large garden that includes a listed garden shed .

The Kunstverein uses the postmodern light house in the inner courtyard of the Wedinghausen Monastery as a second exhibition location . In cooperation with the city's cultural office, the association has been using the striking building for space-related or multimedia projects since 2009. Often this was specially developed for the exhibition location.
