Bani Abidi

Bani Abidi (* 1971 in Karachi ) is a Pakistani video artist , photographer and installation artist who has lived in Berlin since 2011 .

life and work

Abidi studied at the National College of Arts in Lahore . She completed her Master of Fine Arts at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago . In 2011 she received a scholarship from the DAAD's Berlin artist program .

Bani Abidi's works describe structures of rule and power. Staged scenarios are shown that have a documentary effect and are often supplemented by an ironic / humorous look.

Mangoes from (1999) is a film in which an Indian and a Pakistani chat while they are eating mangoes. The latent tension and the eternal rivalry between the two nations India and Pakistan come to light when the interlocutors get into an argument about which country is leading in mango cultivation. The double video projection Reserved (2006) is about the fact that a city is preparing for a visit from a high-ranking politician. Security Barriers AL (2008) is a series of inject prints about types of road barriers. Other well-known films are The Distance from Here (2010) and An Unforseen Situation (2015).
