Susan Philipsz
Susan Philipsz (* 1965 in Glasgow ) is a Scottish sound artist who lives and works in Berlin .
life and work
Susan Philipsz studied sculpture at the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in Dundee from 1989 to 1993 . She graduated from the University of Ulster in Northern Ireland with a Masters .
“Susan Philipsz's artistic material is sound; she designs rooms with the help of recordings of her own voice, a cappella singing or instrumental compositions in order to create evocative sound sculptures that echo in a given environment. She is interested in the interplay between sound and architecture, the psychological effects of songs and their ability to arouse immediate feelings and memories and thereby influence our perception of space. "
The lost reflection
"Nice night, you love night, o calm my desires ..." begins the German text of the Barcarole , which opens the 4th act of the opera Hoffmanns Tales by Jacques Offenbach . Susan Philipsz sang both voices for the sound installation “The Lost Mirror Image” (2007). Both that of the Venetian courtesan Giulietta and that of her admirer Hoffmann, who gives her his mirror image as a token of his love. The echo-like chant of fleeting love and passion can be heard from loudspeakers that are attached to both sides under the Tormin Bridge in Münster .
Lowlands
In 2010 Susan Philipsz won the Turner Prize for her 3-channel sound installation “Lowlands”. She sings three different versions of the traditional Scottish seafaring song "Lowlands Away" in parallel. Only in the chorus do the versions merge into a unified sound experience.
Part File Score
In 2014 Susan Philipsz played in the historic hall of the former Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin, with its twelve steel arches. Based on three film music compositions by Hanns Eisler , Susan Philipsz developed a 24-channel sound installation. The tones come from twelve speakers on each of the arches. Philipsz had the pieces recorded live by musicians: reduced to a violin, a cello, a trumpet and a piano. Various notes have been left out. Each tone is assigned to a loudspeaker. When a piece sounds, its sound wanders through the entire hall. Sometimes it seems like a question and answer, sometimes pauses give the impression that the music is getting lost in the room.
Twelve large-format graphics on the walls show scores by Eisler (1898–1962) overlaid with excerpts from FBI files. Because of his Jewish origins and his communist convictions, Eisler went into American exile between 1930 and 1940 . A life between departure and arrival. His everyday life was recorded in the FBI files. His passport can be seen and also when he visited New York. Many passages are blackened. These gaps visually correspond to the omitted notes of the composition.
