action

Ricky has 1,500 South African pounds in gambling debt. He only has three days to somehow get the money. That, of all people, his old friend Joe brings him the news and then coldly announces that he, the debt collector, would have to kill him, Ricky, on behalf of his clients, is a shock for the friend. Ricky sees no other option than to get away as quickly as possible. Without further ado, he steals Joe's car and drives off. A little later a young woman runs in front of the bonnet. At the last moment, the fugitive manages to evade. Ricky jumps out of Joe's car, which then races uncontrollably to the edge of the road and falls over the cliff into a ravine. The desperate woman is the painter Maria. She tells him that she wanted to kill herself because she has just learned that if she does not have an operation, she will go blind within a very short time. This operation is expensive: it takes 2,000 pounds to do the procedure, which she doesn't have.

Since both have considerable money problems and their survival depends on raising a certain amount of money, Maria and Ricky come up with a bizarre idea that in the end would save at least one of the lives of at least one of them: They decide that each of them should take out accident insurance with the railway company should conclude and each enter the name of the other as the beneficiary in the event of death. During the train ride, Ricky and Maria let go of all civilizing norms of behavior and try (with not too much enthusiasm) to kill each other. However, in the struggle for life and death, they unexpectedly come closer. What Maria does not know, however: Before they both got on the train, Ricky instructed his buddy Joe to get on the train secretly and to get rid of Maria for him, because that way, Ricky Joe tries to lure Joe, he could finally repay his gambling debts to Joe's boss. In the wasteland of South Africa, the three finally showdown.

Production notes

Death drives with was created in 1962 in the wild and a train in South Africa. The German premiere was on August 21, 1962. In South Africa, the strip was under the title Journey Into Nowhere from March 5, 1963 to see.

Ziemann and Schmid had already stood in front of the camera together last year. Also in the plot of ... because the woman is weak was about a lot of money.

The film was already out of date at the time of its premiere; the South African pound only existed until 1961.

Reviews

“The film was shot in South Africa in a beautiful landscape in black and white. The story is quite nice, but mostly ripples to itself. Even on the train, where the game of cat and mouse begins, there is hardly any tension, the attempted murder is half-hearted at best. Only when the two adversaries fall in love and Joe staged a manhunt in the remote steppe does the situation come to a head. The two Germans, Sonja Ziemann (The Thief of Baghdad) and Helmut Schmid (The Naked and Satan), as well as Tony Wright (Callaghan strikes) do their job properly here, but they can't really inspire either. "

In the lexicon of international films it says: "An equally implausible and lengthy gangster story with numerous brutalities, set in South Africa."
