action

The lawyer Jolly Gebhardt, who likes to be smart, drives Jaguar, loves women and a luxury life, has long been used to leading a life in the fast lane. However, in order to maintain his lavish lifestyle, he has embezzled a substantial sum of money from a client who is currently in prison. Now this same criminal Kovacz is being released again, and this beefy, brutal guy is not to be trifled with. His lackeys under Vigulla have already attached themselves to Jolly's heels, either to squeeze the money out of him, to beat him as soft as a diaper, or ideally both at the same time. Jolly can temporarily escape the Kovacz guys with his sports car, but he knows that he has to get money to avoid lying dead in the gutter.

Hanna Schäferkamp could be his salvation. He's been hired to track down this middle-aged woman because an uncle who died in Canada had bequeathed her an inheritance of millions. Jolly comes up with an idea and withholds information about the inheritance for the time being. He seeks the closeness of this woman, type "gray mouse". Hanna is a small company employee, divorced, single parent with a daughter named Gaby. Gebhardt clings to Hanna's heels, tries to find out everything about her, and even follows her at walking pace with his Jaguar to the front door. He goes to her work place under a pretext to get in touch with her, and uses all his bitter man charm. Hanna, who knows absolutely nothing about her inheritance of millions, is just as irritated as disinterested and initially rejects the admirer who suddenly appears.

Gebhardt's lover, Lissy, is more than astonished at Jolly's efforts to get to know this woman better, as she is actually not his type at all. Lissy then makes him a jealous scene. Only when Gebhardt explains the real reasons to her, namely that behind this Hanna there is soon a mountain full of money and he wants to try to marry her in order to be financially off the hook, Lissy lets Gebhardt continue flirting. With her help, he finally succeeds in gradually gaining Hanna's trust. Hanna and Jolly fall in love and go to bed together. Only Gaby recognizes Gebhardt's true character and remains distant and even suspicious of him. Gebhardt already believed he had reached his goal when Kovacz and Vigulla surrounded him. Now all he has left is to flee. Pursued by the crooks and the police, he is killed in a chase followed by a fight with the criminals.

criticism

In Films 1959/61 the following can be read: "Cinema drama on the magazine level, appropriately colored in a pseudo-dramatic manner."

In the lexicon of the international film it says: "Moody melodrama."

"Typical detective melodrama of the time, based on a magazine novel, with a moralistic touch and with a sensationally hypocritical title taken from the Bible."
