Herliany is considered to be the most important contemporary Indonesian poet. She speaks Javanese, but writes in the general national language Bahasa Indonesia and is considered to be a style-maker for the post-modern poetry of her country. For her lyrical work, which has been translated into several languages, she has received the Ministry of Environment's Literature Prize (1994), the Jakarta Arts Council's Poetry Prize (2000), the National Language Center's annual prize (2003) and, in 2006, the most prestigious Indonesian literary prize, the Khatulistiwa Literary Award, awarded. An important subject of her poetry is women as victims of violence , or social violence from a female perspective. Not least because of this, Herliany's work has repeatedly been understood by literary criticism as “feminist” or “anti-patriarchal”, which, however, it expressly does not claim for itself.

Since the late 1990s she has been writing more and more prose - essays, short stories and stories as well as art and theater criticism - and has devoted herself to the collection and literary processing of folk poetry, fairy tales and legends from her multilingual and multicultural homeland, Indonesia . Until 2008 she also headed a sociocultural research and documentation center and the renowned IndonesiaTera publishing house in Magelang.

A number of her poems and short stories are also available in English and German translation. In October 2015, Herliany published a book of poems translated by Ulrike Draesner and Brigitte Oleschinski at the Berlin publishing house called "Hochzeit der Messer" .

Herliany has participated in many literary festivals, including a. also in Germany participated. In 2009 she was a guest at the Heinrich-Böll-Haus in Langenbroich / Eifel as a scholarship holder .
