Terry Fox (artist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Terry Fox (born May 10, 1943 in Seattle , Washington , † October 14, 2008 in Cologne ) was an American action artist , painter and sculptor .

Life

Terry Fox attended high school in Issaquah, Washington until 1961 . He then worked for a year at the aircraft manufacturer Boeing to finance art studies in Rome . At the same time, Fox studied evening classes at the Cornish School of Allied Arts in Seattle. He had his first European stay to study painting in 1962 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome . From 1963 he stayed in San Francisco . In 1968 Fox spent a year in Paris , where he gave up painting in favor of direct art actions. In 1969 Terry Fox returned to San Francisco to teach. Since 1970 he has had a variety of solo exhibitions in Europe and the United States.

From 1980 to 1981 Terry Fox worked as a DAAD scholarship holder at Künstlerhaus Bethanien in the Kreuzberg district . In view of the Berlin Wall , his work Berlin Wall Scored for Sound was created . In 1987 Fox - together with his colleague Maurizio Nannucci - took part in a symposium organized by a Bremen association in the Italian mountain village of Formine on Lake Maggiore . This is where the Pyrofilo work was created . In 2005 Fox worked as a guest at the Barkenhoff in Worpswede for a few months .

With his art actions and installations, Fox mostly reflected on his own life and death: he suffered from cancer and had a near-death experience after a heart operation . This is the name he gave to one of his installations in the Saarbrücken city gallery Ataraxia (German: Seelenruh , after Epicurus ), in which Fox uses sound installations and other objects to highlight important stages in his life.

After stays in San Francisco and Liège , Terry Fox lived and worked in Cologne since 1996. He was married to the filmmaker and author Marita Loosen-Fox.

The Terry Fox Association eV has existed in Cologne since it was founded in 2009. Its aim is to make the artist's work visible through exhibitions, concerts, research projects and symposia. The members of the board are Carsten Seiffarth and Marita Loosen-Fox.

The artist Fox, like Joseph Beuys , Wolf Vostell and Nam June Paik , is one of the representatives of Fluxus . With his actions, in which he mostly includes his own body, he polarizes the audience. Fox has been described as an American "protest artist" of the 1960s and 1970s.

Fox sought answers to the question of what sculpture is and experimented with direct forms of communication. Sound and language are recurring elements in his diverse work that defies clear categorizations. The use of everyday, simple materials (dust, piano strings, sardine cans) is characteristic of his 'sculptures', which often only existed for the duration of their performance. Fox tried to depict the connections from the labyrinth of the inner ear or the labyrinth of Chartres Cathedral in his media or from pangrams . Living through illness and the isolation that came with it became the starting point of his artistic work. The physical experience (one's own as well as that of the audience) was a central element of his actions, performances and sound installations.
