József Kovács (long distance runner)

József Kovács [ ˈjoːʒɛf ˈkovaːʧ ] (born March 3, 1926 , † March 29, 1987 ) was a Hungarian long-distance runner .

József Kovács was eliminated from the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki in the 5000 meter run . At the European Athletics Championships in 1954 in Bern, Kovács won the silver medal over 10,000 m after an exciting final in 29: 25.8 minutes, just ahead of Briton Frank Sando . The winner, however, was the Czech Emil Zátopek, almost half a minute ahead . Four days later, Kovács gave up in the 5000 meter final. It was won by the Ukrainian Volodymyr Kuz, who competed for the Soviet Union, in a world record time .

At the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956 , Kuz sovereignly won the 10,000 meter final. Kovács won silver again in a tight finish, with 28: 52.4 minutes he was a good second ahead of Australian Allan Lawrence .

In 1960 at the Olympic Games in Rome, Kovács came in 15th place over 10,000 meters in 29: 42.2 minutes.

József Kovács was 1.63 m tall and weighed 50 kg.
