Frank Sando ( Frank Dennis Sando ; born March 14, 1931 in Maidstone ; † October 13, 2012 ) was a British long-distance and cross-country runner . In addition to three medals at the Commonwealth Games and European championships on the track, he won six medals at the unofficial Cross World Championships, the Cross of Nations, in the 1950s .

Life

Between 1952 and 1960, Sando always placed in the top 10 of the English championship in cross-country running and at the Cross of Nations. However, he could win the English championship only once in 1957. At the Cross of Nations, he won in 1955 and 1957; In 1953, 1956 and 1959 he was second, and in 1958 third.

He was also successful on his career: in Helsinki in 1952 and in Melbourne in 1956 he took part in the 10,000-meter run at the Olympic Games; In 1952 he was fifth with a British record in 29: 51.8 minutes and tenth in 1956. In 1952 he improved the British 3000 meter record to 8: 25.6 minutes.

1954 Sando won silver over 6 miles and bronze over 3 miles at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Vancouver , as well as almost half a minute behind Emil Zátopek and 2 seconds behind József Kovács bronze over 10,000 meters at the European Championships in Bern .
