Ellen Müller Prize
Ellen Müller-Preis (* May 6, 1912 in Berlin as Ellen Preis ; † November 18, 2007 in Vienna - Lainz ) was an Austrian foil fencer and Olympic champion at the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles .
Life
The daughter of a Styrian grew up in Berlin, where she initially worked as an athlete . It was only at the age of 18, after moving to Vienna, that she began taking fencing lessons from her aunt Wilhelmine Werdnik. After only six months she became Austrian champion and the following year she was third at the European Championships in Vienna.
The German-Austrian dual citizen initially applied to the German association to participate in the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, which she rejected. So she traveled to the USA with the Austrian team . There she succeeded in winning the gold medal with the final victory over Judy Guinness ( United Kingdom ). However, she owed her victory to the fairness of her opponent, who corrected two wrong decisions by the referees to her disadvantage.
In 1936 in Berlin and in 1948 in London , Müller-Preis was able to achieve third place in each case. There were also three world championships and numerous national titles. In 1956, at the age of 44, she qualified for the finals at the Olympic Games in Melbourne .
After completing her active career, Müller Prize was a professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and taught historical fencing and stage fencing at the Max Reinhardt Seminar and at the Vienna Burgtheater . Müller-Preis succumbed to kidney failure at the age of 95 in the Lainz Hospital in Vienna. She was buried at the Vienna Central Cemetery .
