Svetlana Anatolyevna Boiko

Svetlana Anatoljewna Boiko ( Russian Светлана Анатольевна Бойко ; born April 13, 1972 in Rostov-on-Don ) is a former Russian foil fencer who took part in the Olympic Games four times and won team gold when she last participated in the Olympics.

Career

Boiko took part in an Olympic fencing tournament for the first time in Atlanta in 1996 , in the individual competition she took 18th place, with the team she reached sixth place. She won her first international medals in 1998. With the Russian team she won the European Championships . In the same year she reached the final in the individual competition of the world championships and was defeated there against the German Sabine Bau . 2000 Boiko won again with the Russian team at the European Championships . At the Olympic Games in Sydney they finished 19th in the individual, the Russian team reached fifth place.

In 2001 Boiko received silver at the World Championships with the Russian team . In 2002 the European Championships took place in Moscow, Boiko won the bronze medal both individually and with the team. She was more successful at the World Championships , which were held a month and a half later in Lisbon. Swetlana Boiko won the individual final against her teammate Jekaterina Juschewa , both of whom were also part of the winning team. In 2003 Boiko again won two bronze medals at the European Championships . At the World Championships, the Russian team lost to the Polish women in the final. In the final of the European Championships 2004 Boiko lost to the Romanian Laura Badea-Cârlescu , in the team competition the Romanians also won ahead of the Russians. At the Olympic fencing tournament in Athens , only the individual competition was on the program, Boiko was eliminated in the round of 16 and took eleventh place.

In 2005, Boiko again reached the individual finals at the European Championships , but lost to Sylwia Gruchała from Poland , and the Italians won the team competition ahead of the Russians. In 2006 Boiko won team gold at both the European championships and the world championships , followed by silver at the European championships in 2007 . At the end of her career, Boiko won team gold again at the European Championships in 2008 , and the Russian team beat the US team in the final of the 2008 Olympic Games .
