Svetlana Tširkova

Svetlana Michailowna Tširkova-Lozovaja ( Russian Светлана Михайловна Чиркова / Swetlana Michailowna Tschirkowa ; born November 5, 1945 in Tupner , Ziwilsk Rajon , Chuvash ASSR ) is a former Soviet fencer of Estonian origin.

Life and sporting success

Svetlana Tširkova moved from her Chuvash homeland to the Estonian SSR in 1950 . She lived and trained in Tallinn since 1955. Since 1968 she was a member of the Soviet national team of female foil fencers .

At the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City , Svetlana Tširkova won the gold medal in foil fencing (team competition) at the age of 22. At the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich , she won the gold medal again in the Soviet team.

In 1969 she was runner-up in the team and took third place in the individual ranking. In 1970 and 1971 she was the world champion of foil fencers (team ranking). Between 1967 and 1978 Svetlana Tširkova was Estonian champion seven times.

In 1973 Svetlana Tširkova graduated from the Tallinn Pedagogical Institute . Since 1977 she has worked as a trainer in the Estonian SSR. Since 1980 she has been called Svetlana Tširkova-Lozovaja.
