Elena Dmitrievna Belovea

Jelena Dmitryevna Belova ( Russian Елена Дмитриевна Белова , born Novikova * 28. July 1947 in Sovetskaya Gavan ) is a former Soviet Foil - fencer . She won four gold medals in Olympics .

Career

Jelena Dmitrijewna Belowa made her Olympic debut at the Summer Olympics in Mexico City in 1968 , at that time still starting under her maiden name Novikowa, and won two gold medals in the individual and with the team. At the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich , Belowa was able to achieve the gold medal with the team again. In the individual she was only fifth in Munich. In Montreal at the 1976 Summer Olympics , she was able to win team gold for the third time. Belowa improved in the individual and won bronze this time. At the home games in Moscow in 1980 , she could not win another medal in the individual, but reached silver with the team. On May 17, 2007 Jelena Dmitrijewna Belowa was honored with the Pierre-de-Coubertin-Medal , the highest honor of the IOC.

Her first marriage was to the modern pentathlete Vyacheslav Below . Her second husband, the composer Valery Ivanov, wrote the "Romantic Waltz" in her honor. She currently works as a professor at the Belarusian Academy of Physical Education and Sports.
