Karen Lachmann
Karen Vilhelmine Lachmann (born May 30, 1916 in Beijing , † September 30, 1962 in Gentofte ) was a Danish fencer .
Life
The Beijing-born daughter of an engineer grew up in a wealthy Jewish family through her mother's marriage to the lithographer Aksel Lachmann with her two sisters. This enabled her to take private fencing lessons from the French-born fencing master L. Mahaut and to practice her sport at Københavns Dame Fægteklub from 1898 .
In the course of her career, she took part in the Olympic Games four times , each of which she reached the finals. After finishing fifth in the women's individual foil sheet in 1936 , she won the silver medal at the 1948 Olympic Games and the bronze medal in 1952 .
Due to constant back problems, she had to undergo several operations, including implanting a piece of bone from her shin into her back. Nevertheless, she was able to continue her career at the highest level. In addition to other international successes such as the world title in the individual competition in 1954, she won the Danish championship in foil fencing from 1951 to 1957 without interruption. After another major operation in 1958, she ended her active career the following year with her last national individual championship.
Until her death in 1962 she was an official of the Danish Sports Confederation ( Danske Idræts-Forbunds , DIF for short).
