Herbert Wiedermann
Herbert Wiedermann (born November 1, 1927 in Bodensdorf , Carinthia ) is a former Austrian canoeist . He won two Olympic medals in a two-person kayak.
At the Canoe World Championships in Copenhagen in 1950, Max Raub and Herbert Wiedermann, who started for Vienna, won the bronze medal in a two-person kayak over 500 meters behind two Swedish boats. In the 4 x 500 meter canoe relay, the Swedes with Gert Fredriksson won ahead of the hosts from Denmark, the Austrian relay with Herbert Klepp , Max Raub, Herbert Wiedermann and Günther Rührnschopf received the bronze medal. At the Olympic Games in Helsinki in 1952 , the relay was not on the program. Raub and Wiedermann won the bronze medal behind the boats from Finland and Sweden in the kayak double over the 1000 meter distance. In the 10,000 meter distance the Finns also won ahead of the Swedish boat, behind the Hungarians Raub and Wiedermann took fourth place. Canoeists won both Austrian medals in Helsinki: In addition to the bronze medal from Raub and Wiedermann, Gertrude Liebhart won silver in a single kayak.
At the Canoe World Championships in Mâcon in 1954, Raub and Wiedermann won bronze with the two Linzers Alfred Schmidtberger and Hermann Salzner in the relay behind the Swedish and Hungarian canoeists. On the 10,000 meter course, Raub and Wiedermann won the world championship ahead of Swedes Sigvard Johansson and Rolf Fjellmann . The 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne marked the end of the two-person kayak career with Raub and Wiedermann . The two won the bronze medal again over 1000 meters behind the boats from Germany and the Soviet Union. The two world champions did not compete on the long distance, Salzner and Schmidtberger took eleventh place. As four years before, Austria won two medals in Melbourne and again both on the regatta course: In addition to Raub and Wiedermann, Alfred Sageder and Josef Kloimstein also received bronze medals in rowing.
While Max Raub ended his athletic career, Wiedermann competed for a few more years. At the Olympic Games in Rome in 1960 he reached the semifinals in a single kayak, with the kayak relay held for the only time at the Olympic Games in 1960, he was eliminated in the hope race.
