Christopher John Albright (born January 14, 1979 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) is a retired American football player on the position of defender .

After serving as an active soccer player, Albright is assistant coach and technical director at Philadelphia Union .

Athletic career

The 1.85 meter tall Albright began his football career as a striker and played in that position between 1997 and 1998 for the University of Virginia . In 1999 he was named by the NCAA as one of the best players in Division I - as a so-called "Division I First-Team All-American" - and considered one of the greatest attacking talents. In 1998 he also made 18 appearances in the U-20 national team and scored ten goals. Between 1997 and 1998 he scored 31 goals in 48 appearances for the UVA soccer team.

The club DC United took one of the lower ranks for the nationwide drafting system and thus had only a small chance of signing a player from the so-called Project 40 team (a joint venture between Major League Soccer sponsored by the Nike company (MLS) and the United States Soccer Federation (USSF), which wanted to help young soccer talent develop), of which Albright was a member. That Albright was able to switch to DC United in 1999, he owed the fact that an exchange deal was negotiated with Miami Fusion , which in return provided for a move Roy Lassiter from DC United to Miami. However, the move from Lassiter to Miami did not come into force until 2000, so that both were able to win the MLS Cup together in 1999 . Also in 1999 Albright was used in the senior team of the United States and scored it on September 8 against Jamaica , in his first appearance from the start, his first goal. He also played all four of the U20 team's games at the Junior World Cup in Nigeria , where the United States advanced to the round of 16.

In 2000, Albright played from then on in the qualifying games of the U23 Olympic selection and then at the Olympic Games in Sydney itself, in which the US selection was able to achieve fourth place. At DC United Albright became more and more a regular player from 2000, but from then on developed with only four goals in 56 games a poor hit yield, which resulted in Albright's retreat into the right midfield. Bruce Arena even put Albright in the position of the right full-back and thus brought his strengths, which lie in the physical game and great speed on the flank, to unfold in a new way.

Albright moved to Los Angeles Galaxy in 2002 and from then on also held the position of right-back at the club. There he won his second MLS Cup straight away and in the final gave the template for the decisive 1-0 winner against New England Revolution by Carlos Ruiz . Due to a knee injury, however, he was only used in 15 games and missed twelve more. In 2004 Albright completed his best season for the time being and was nominated for the Major League Soccer All-Star Game , which he won 3-1 on two own assists.

In the national team Albright was used sporadically and had lost the fight for the position of right-back at the 2006 World Cup against Frankie Hejduk and Steven Cherundolo . However, Hejduk's injury then ensured that Albright was subsequently appointed to the squad. In the tournament itself, when the US team was eliminated after the group stage, Albright was not used in any of the three games.

Albright has played for the New England Revolution since the 2008 season . In his first season with the Revs, he was part of the regular squad in the team. A year later, due to an injury, he only played one game.

On January 14, 2010, he moved to the New York Red Bulls . After recovering from his injury, he became a strong hold back for the Red Bulls' defense. On November 30, 2011, New York decided not to renew and Albright entered the 2011 MLS Re-Entry Draft. No other team picked him there.

On January 13, 2012, he signed a contract with the Philadelphia Union . After two seasons he announced his retirement and the end of his career.
