Steven "Steve" Emil Cherundolo (born February 19, 1979 in Rockford , Illinois ) is a former American football player and current coach . During his active time as a player, he played as a right full-back at Hannover 96 for 15 years and took part in three soccer world championships with the USA national team.

Steven Cherundolo began his football career at La Jolla Nomads Club , where he was a regular.

When Cherundolo attended the University of Portland , he played for the university team from 1997 to 1998. His potential was already discovered back then, because in his first season he was voted “Freshman of the Year” at the West Coast Conference . In January 1999, the right-back was signed by the then second division soccer team Hannover 96 for 250,000 DM.

For Hannover 96, he first played 68 second division games and rose to the Bundesliga in the 2001/02 season . He scored his first goal in his second Bundesliga year against Borussia Mönchengladbach with a head, although with his height of 1.72 m he was one of the smaller players in the Bundesliga. He has been a regular among all Hanoverian coaches ( Ralf Rangnick , Ewald Lienen , Peter Neururer , Dieter Hecking , Andreas Bergmann and Mirko Slomka ) since the rise in 2001/02 and is one of the crowd's favorites of the 96s. He scored his first international goal in March 2006 in a friendly against the German national team in Dortmund (result: 1: 4). In November 2007, the defender scored a second time against South Africa .

He was in the US squad for the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea, the 2006 World Cup in Germany , where he played in all three preliminary round matches, and the 2010 World Cup in South Africa . There the Americans survived the preliminary round before losing to Ghana in the round of 16 .

Cherundolo is the only player in the service of Hannover 96 who has participated in three world championships.

In his Bundesliga career, Cherundolo played a total of 300 first division games for Hannover 96 from the beginning of the 2002/03 season until the end of the 2012/13 season, scoring six goals. He is the player with the most Bundesliga appearances for Hannover 96. On the list of all players active at the time with the most Bundesliga appearances, Cherundolo finished fourth after the 2011/12 season. Of all the Americans who have played in the Bundesliga so far, he has the most appearances. He is second behind Dedê on the list of foreigners with the most Bundesliga appearances for a single Bundesliga club.

Career as a coach

After the end of his career, Cherundolo became Sören Osterland's assistant coach on March 19, 2014 for the second team of Hannover 96, which played in the Regionalliga Nord . For the 2014/15 season he took over the Reds' U-15 team as head coach.

On April 20, 2015, Cherundolo was introduced as assistant coach by Michael Frontzeck for the first team of Hannover 96. After successfully avoiding relegation, he initially returned as head coach of the U-15s before taking over the U17s of the Reds for the 2015/16 season .

On January 30, 2018, Cherundolo, like his new colleague Ilija Aračić, became assistant coach of the head coach Tayfun Korkut at VfB Stuttgart . In October 2018, VfB Stuttgart released Cherundolo as well as Korkut and Aračić from his duties. From 2019 to 2020 the Americans graduated from the Hennes Weisweiler Academy in the sports school in Hennef the exam to become football coach and received in August 2020, the UEFA Pro License.

Also in August 2020, Cherundolo was introduced as assistant coach of the DFB's U-15 junior team, where he will assist head coach Christian Wück .

Steven Cherundolo is socially committed to the association "Kinderherz Hannover eV", of which he is a founding member and ambassador on the board. Kinderherz Hannover eV aims to promote research on heart valves that grow with the child.

Private

Steven Cherundolo grew up in Rancho Peñasquitos, a neighborhood in San Diego , and attended Mt. Carmel High School (MCHS). He is Catholic, born in 2009 with Mandy. Rosier married and lives in Großburgwedel .
