Aimé Marie Gaspard de Clermont-Tonnerre , marquis de Clermont-Tonnerre, duc de Clermont-Tonnerre (born November 27, 1779 in Paris , † January 8, 1865 at Glisolles Palace) was a French general and minister .

biography

He was born the son of Gaspard Paulin de Clermont-Tonnerre ( house Clermont-Tonnerre , * 1750; † 1842) and Anne Marie Louise Bernard de Rieux ( house Boulainvilliers , * 1758; † 1781); Cardinal Anne-Antoine-Jules de Clermont-Tonnerre (1749-1830) was his uncle (brother of the father).

Clermont-Tonnerre joined the French army, took part in the campaigns in Italy , Germany and Spain and in 1808 became adjutant of the King of Naples, in whose favor and service he remained from then on.

After 1814 he resigned with the rank of colonel in the French army, became maréchal de camp and after the second return of the king peer of France and commander of the guard cavalry.

He was on the side of the moderate conservative party and in 1821 was under Jean-Baptiste de Villèle Minister of the Navy and Lieutenant-General . In 1823 he exchanged the Ministry of the Navy for that of the War and energetically reorganized the army.

After the July Revolution he refused to swear allegiance to the new government and retired into private life.
