Anne-Antoine-Jules de Clermont-Tonnerre
Anne-Antoine-Jules de Clermont-Tonnerre (born January 1, 1749 in Paris , † February 21, 1830 in Toulouse ) was a French cardinal of the Roman Church .
Life
He was born the son of Jules Charles Henri, Duc de Clermont-Tonnerre († 1794), and Marie Le Tonnelier de Fontenay-Trésigny. The politician Stanislas de Clermont-Tonnerre (1747–1792), murdered by revolutionaries, was his cousin, and General Aimé Marie Gaspard de Clermont-Tonnerre (1779–1865) was his nephew.
After de Clermont-Tonnerre obtained a licentiate in theology from the Sorbonne University and was ordained a priest , he held the office of vicar general of the diocese of Besançon for five years . At the same time abbot of Montier-en-Der , he was a member of the French clergy from 1772.
After he was by King Louis XVI. nominated bishop of ( Châlons ) and by Pope Pius VI. on February 25, 1782 had been appointed Bishop of Châlons, he received on April 14, 1782 by Alexandre Angélique de Talleyrand-Périgord in Paris the episcopal ordination . In 1789 a member of the Estates General , he refused to be sworn in on the civil constitution of the clergy and went into exile in Germany. Although he renounced his diocese on December 15, 1801, he returned to Châlons in 1817 .
On August 28, 1820, Pope Pius VII appointed him Archbishop of Toulouse and created him cardinal in the consistory of December 2, 1822 . After he had attended the conclave in Rome in 1823 , he received from the new pontiff Leo XII. on November 20, 1823 the red hat and on November 24, 1823 the titular church Santissima Trinità al Monte Pincio . Cardinal Clermont-Tonnerre also took part in the conclave of 1829 with the election of Pope Pius VIII .
According to a surviving portrait, the cardinal was a Commander of the Order of the Holy Spirit .
