Dawn Michelle Staley (born May 4, 1970 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , United States ) is a former professional basketball player. She played for the Charlotte Sting and Houston Comets in the Women's National Basketball Association as a point guard .

As a player for the US national team, she won three gold medals and was the flag bearer for the United States for the opening ceremony of the Games in Athens.

Player career

college

Staley played for the University of Virginia women's basketball team for four years . In 1991, she led her team to the NCAA Women's Division I Basketball Championship final, where the team was beaten by the Tennessee Lady Volunteers , the University of Tennessee's women's basketball team .

American Basketball League (1996-1998)

In 1996 she joined the ABL and played in her first season for the Richmond Rage , with whom she came to the ABL finals. 1997 the Rage were relocated to Philadelphia, so they played in the 1997/98 season for the Philadelphia Rage . Since the ABL was dissolved after only 2 seasons, she had to end her career in the ABL involuntarily.

Women's National Basketball Association

After the ABL was dissolved, she moved like many other ABL stars to the WNBA , where she was selected in the 1999 WNBA Draft by the Charlotte Sting as the ninth player overall. In the 2001 season she led the Sting to the WNBA final, where they had to admit defeat with the Sting 0-2 to the Los Angeles Sparks .

Before the start of the 2005 season , Staley announced that this would be her final season as a player in the WNBA. On August 1, 2005, Staley was transferred to the Houston Comets . The Comets reached the playoffs this season, but where they had to admit defeat to the Sacramento Monarchs in the Western Conference Finals 0-2. At the end of her playing career, she played the 2006 season for the Houston team.

She was chosen for her achievements in the WNBA both in 2006 in the WNBA All-Decade Team consisting of ten players and in 2011 for the 15th anniversary of the league as one of the WNBA's Top 15 Players of All Time .

Europe

For some time she was also active at club level in Europe.

International

Staley won the gold medal with the US women's basketball team at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta , the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney and the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens . At the opening ceremony of the Athens Games, Staley was the flag bearer for the United States. In addition, she became basketball world champion with the US team in 1998 and 2002 and won the bronze medal in 1994.

Coaching career

While she was still playing in the WNBA and the national team, she began coaching Temple University women's basketball team in her hometown of Philadelphia in 2000. Under her leadership, the Owls won 172 games and lost 80 by 2008. In eight years, the team reached six times participation in the NCAA tournament.

In the spring of 2008 she moved to the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC . In the first seven years of her coaching career at the Gamecocks, she was able to continuously improve the team and achieved 34 wins and 3 losses in the 2014-15 season, winning the Southeastern Conference regular championship for the second time in a row and the tournament for the first time. In the NCAA tournament, the team reached the final four.

In the 2016-2017 season, her team won the NCAA tournament, which is considered the national championship.

Since 2006, she has held various positions on the coaching staff of the US Basketball Association. In 2017, she was named head coach of the United States women's national basketball team.
