The sports teams of the University of Tennessee call themselves Tennessee Volunteers . It is only in the extremely successful women's basketball that one speaks of the Lady Volunteers, or Lady Vols for short . The colors of the athletics department are orange and white. Orange is associated with college and goes back to the American Daisy .

Derivation of the name

One of Tennessee's nicknames is Volunteer State - "state of volunteers". It dates from the time of the British-American War , in which numerous Tennessee citizens fought for their country as volunteers.
